Make your own dishwashing powder

Back to Basics - today we're conjuring up a simple yet equally effective DIY powder for the dishwasher from just a few ingredients. An easy way to make your kitchen and dishwashing more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Sustainability doesn't always mean a lot of effort. Fancy a new Lesswaste DIY? Let's go!

Make your own dishwasher powder with 3 raw ingredients

True all-rounders for homemade cleaning products in the home: baking soda, washing soda and citric acid.

What exactly do the individual ingredients do?

  • Baking soda: cleans and neutralizes odor
  • Washing soda: dissolves grease and cleans
  • Citric acid: decalcifies

Our homemade dishwasher powder works just as well as, for example, bought tablets - of course, a heavily soiled bowl might not be 100% clean sometimes. But this also happens with conventional, especially more environmentally friendly, cleaners. Overall, we are very satisfied with the result and are happy about this sustainable alternative.

Why make your own dishwasher detergent?

The advantages are numerous:

  • sustainable = you can buy all ingredients plastic-free
  • environmentally friendly = all ingredients are biodegradable and harm neither you nor the environment. Conventional dishwasher powder contains a lot of chemicals - all of which end up unfiltered in the wastewater.
  • inexpensive = for almost 400 grams you pay less than €2

What you need

Here's how to do it

Weigh all ingredients and pour them one by one into a Mason Jar. Make sure that the ingredients are poured in slowly and don't "dust," as the raw materials should not get into the eyes or be inhaled.

Now place the lid on the jar, screw it on tightly and simply shake the whole thing vigorously. This way all the ingredients mix easily and your dishwashing detergent is ready.

Especially practical: you can simply attach a stainless steel measuring spoon to the outside of the jar. The holder for the spoon simply clips onto the jar. This way you always have the spoon at hand and can optimally dose the dishwasher powder. 1 spoon corresponds to a teaspoon and is indicated on the spoon - practical, right?

Tip: you can use our chalkboard lid and the matching chalk markers to label the lid.

Dosing

Depending on the degree of soiling, we recommend 1-2 spoons of dishwasher powder per wash cycle. Only use a program up to a maximum of 55 degrees. Don't forget to add rinse aid and salt to the corresponding containers in the dishwasher.

By the way, vinegar is also suitable as a substitute for rinse aid.
