Why are sprouts so healthy?

Before we dive into the practical details, let's look at the benefits of growing sprouts. Sprouts are small powerhouses packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. During germination, enzymatic activity significantly increases their nutrient density. When you grow sprouts, you transform simple seeds, legumes, or grains into true nutritional powerhouses.

Sprouts are particularly rich in:

  • Vitamins like Vitamin C, which supports your immune system.
  • Minerals like magnesium and potassium, which regulate metabolism.
  • Antioxidants that prevent cell damage from free radicals.

Step-by-step guide: How to grow sprouts

Growing sprouts is quite simple if you follow a few basic steps:

A tip in advance: The process of growing sprouts is almost identical for all sprouting seeds. Only the time until the sprouts are ready to eat varies depending on the variety – you can find the exact number of days on the respective packaging.

  1. Soak sprouting seeds: Fill the sprouting jar with water and soak the sprouting seeds for 8–12 hours, depending on the variety. Preferably overnight.
  2. Drain water: Drain the water and rinse the seeds thoroughly. Make sure the water drains completely after each rinse to prevent mold growth. Place the jar upside down so that excess water can drain off.
  3. Rinse twice daily: To keep your sprouts moist and encourage germination, rinse them twice daily with fresh water. Always let the excess water drain well. The water should always drain completely after rinsing. This way, the sprouts stay fresh and healthy!
  4. Ensure air circulation: Make sure the sprouts get enough air so they don't start to rot. The lid of the sprouting jar ensures optimal ventilation.
  5. Harvest after 2–7 days: Depending on the sprouting seed variety, you can harvest your sprouts after 2 to 7 days. Once the sprouts have reached a length of 3–5 cm, they are ready for consumption.

The right environment for growing sprouts

The location plays a big role when growing sprouts. Your sprouts should be in a warm, but not too hot, place. A normal room temperature between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as the sprouts can dry out. If you create the right conditions, you can grow sprouts practically all year round.

What can I do with sprouts?

Sprouts are not only healthy, but also incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Here are some ideas on how you can use them:

  • Sprout salad: Simply mix with a dressing of your choice.
  • Spice up salads: Mix your sprouts into any salad to give it an extra nutritional boost.
  • Smoothies: Add sprouts to your favorite smoothie – they go perfectly with fruits and water.
  • Juices: You can also juice sprouts and enjoy them as a fresh shot.
  • Open-faced sandwiches: Sprouts on bread make any sandwich healthier and crunchier.
  • Garnish dishes: Decorate rice, noodle dishes, and more with a splash of freshness.

Which sprout varieties can I grow?

There are many different seeds that are excellent for growing sprouts. Here are some of the most popular varieties:

  • Fenugreek: These small sprouts are characterized by their aromatic, spicy, curry-like taste and go excellently with rice, noodle dishes, vegetable curries, and Indian and Asian dishes in general.
  • Mung beans: These sprouts are crunchy and ideal for Asian dishes.
  • Radish Vulcano: With their slightly  pungent  and  spicy  flavor, these nutrient-rich radish sprouts are ideal as a fresh addition to salads, sandwich toppings, soups, and smoothies.
  • Daikon Radish: They have a spicy taste and go perfectly with savory dishes.
  • Pea: Mild and crunchy, perfect as a raw snack or in salads.

Please note

The holes of our stainless steel sprouting lid have a diameter of 1.5 mm due to manufacturing. Therefore, the holes are too large for varieties with very small seeds, such as alfalfa or red cabbage – however, sprouting works perfectly with our   remaining varieties   or other larger sprouts.

  • Alfalfa: Mild in taste, perfect for salads or smoothies.
  • Red Cabbage: Red cabbage sprouts are fresh, slightly sour, generally mild in taste and reminiscent of cabbage.
