Rhubarb, this wonderfully sour and refreshing plant, is known not only for its culinary properties but also for its numerous health benefits. In this post, you'll find not only tips for canning but also a delicious seasonal breakfast idea with yogurt, granola, and homemade rhubarb compote.

In summer, so many wonderful dishes can be preserved and prepared for the colder months. But how do you make food last the longest? The be-all and end-all is proper sterilization of the jars!

How to sterilize jars correctly

Here are some tips on how to properly sterilize jars:

  1. Prepare everything: Make sure the jars and lids are thoroughly cleaned. Rinse them well with warm water and dish soap to remove dirt and grease.
  2. Prepare the water bath: Take a large pot or pan and fill it with enough water to completely cover the jars. Place a clean dishtowel or a wire rack at the bottom of the pot to prevent direct contact with the heat source.
  3. Heat the jars in the water bath: Place the jars and lids face up in the water bath. Make sure they do not touch each other and have enough space. Bring the water to a boil and let the jars boil for about 10 minutes. Tip: To allow the material to get used to the hot temperatures, it is advisable not to put the jars directly into boiling water, but to warm them up with the water. This allows the material to slowly expand and completely eliminates the risk of breakage.
  4. Let the jars dry: After the jars have been sterilized, carefully remove them from the water bath with tongs or a heat-resistant glove and place them on a clean dishtowel or a drying rack. Let them air dry without wiping them down to prevent contamination.
  5. Use the sterilized jars: Once the jars are completely cool, they are sterilized and ready for use. Fill them with your desired foods such as jam, compote, or pickled vegetables. Make sure the food has also been sufficiently heated before filling.

By correctly sterilizing the jars, you can ensure that your homemade preserves are longer lasting and optimal food safety is guaranteed.
